Compress a video for Discord

Discord raised its free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. Pick your limit and Altols re-encodes the video to fit, using every megabyte for picture quality.

MP4, MOV or M4V. Free up to 100 MB. Your video stays on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose a video. It stays on your device.
  2. Pick the size you need. Altols works out the bitrate and resolution that fit.
  3. Your browser re-encodes the picture as H.264 and copies the sound across untouched.
  4. Download the MP4.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my compressed clip look soft?

Size is bitrate multiplied by length. A 3-minute video squeezed into 20 MB only has about 850 kbps for picture, so Altols lowers the resolution to keep it clean rather than blocky. Trim long clips first for a sharper result.

Will it still play in Discord?

Yes. The output is a standard MP4 with H.264 video, which Discord previews inline on desktop and mobile.

Do I need to aim below 20 MB?

Altols aims about 4% under your target to leave room for the file container, so a 20 MB target produces a file Discord accepts.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Altols uses your browser's built-in video encoder, so the video is processed on your device and never leaves it.

Is there a size limit?

Free compression works on videos up to 100 MB. For larger videos, up to 1 GB, a 24-hour pass costs $2.99 USD.
